CURRICULUM VITAE

Born in Taumaranui, King Country, New Zealand in the 1950s and lived in Ohura until the age of five, when my family moved to the Bay of Plenty; and from the age of eleven moved to other areas around Rotorua and Taupo, then stayed in Taranaki for about four years. I returned to school after working in a printing house and remained there when my parents moved away. Enjoyed five years in Christchurch at University, Teachers' College and a part-time first teaching year before returning to teach in a Community College in Taranaki for two years.

After ten years as a Dental Practice Manager and five years in Community Arts, some further studies in Writing and Ceramics, and raising two children, I worked as an Information Officer part-time, while continuing my Writing and Visual Arts practice. Studies in Writing and Fine Arts practice are beginning now after caring for two very sick elders then relocating.

Influences: I have been involved in the community and arts since a child, helping at concerts and events in which my mother sang, played the piano & made costumes and backdrops....was brought up alongside/ involved in the Maori culture and I have been making things for others since the age of nine. A later influence was an introduction called "The New Poets" that included Concrete Poetry

A painter I called Mrs Wyren was the first serious painter whose studio I visited. She featured purple flowers in the foreground of every landscape. This seemed strange to my Sunday painter mother, but fascinating to me. Miro, the Delaunays and the PreRaphaelites and the Arts and Crafts movement were early favourites, the work of Len Lye,  Ben Shahn and Claes Oldenberg influenced me later. I had many interesting Art teachers in various schools, but my  mentor from the age of 15 was Jim Wiley, who was keen on life drawing, oils, print-making and ceramics. A Science teacher and a neighbour both put in some time with me to teach me black and white 35mm photography and darkroom techniques, enabling me to photograph and print images of my own three-dimensional work for my folio for entry into art school. I majored in Sculpture with Design and Art Education components.

A later influence was an introduction to "The New Poets" at teachers' training college, and of the styles investigated, Concrete Poetry has become one of my enduring passions.

Studying Poetry Writing and Editing with Helen Annand has been most valuable with lovely peers and improved my writing.

Ian K S Robertson my brother, is a self-taught artist at Birdlings Flat near Christchurch in New Zealand, and I particularly love his painted seascapes.

My art work is particularly about growth, (Strive series) mostly positive, sometimes with wry or quirky humour (Eviscerated notions, Black loop), aspects of love, (Noughts and Crosses series), as well as watery themes (Seasong, Watery "A") Current plant and human portraits and also landscapes explore aspects of growth, decline, rebirth and renewal.
