"Flower Power"

Flower Power Workshop Painting

The "Flower Power" Workshop, is a traveling Workshop Project  that has appeared regularly at the Womans Studio Center, for 8 years, in June, and in February. The Flower Workshop  is the Legacy of Art Students League, Instructor, and Past President,  Lisa Specht who held week long flower workshops in June for 20 years.  Shelli was Specht monitor for many years, and looked forward to this annual event. Upon the death of her instructor/mentor, Shelli began this workshop in her honor.

Modeled after Lisa's Workshop, Shelli purchases fresh seasonal flowers from flower wholesalers, and creates  beautiful arrangements for students to paint over the duration of the Workshop. The Newark Museum, as well as The National Art League, and most recently, The Art Guild at Elderfields, have hosted "Flower Power".

Thank you for your interest in highlights of "Flowers in February" 2009. We also look forward to upcoming workshops. Please check back with us for more this year and in 2010!

Shelli Robiner-Ardizzone
has led workshops for 8 years at the Women’s Studio Center, Long Island City, and at Great Neck Arts Center. She has been awarded a residency at the Vermont Studio Center and grants from National Academy School and Art Students League. She also teaches Art Workshops at the Newark Museum.

Visiting Taos, NM in 2007 was a peak experience for me, the names, Taos, and Santa Fe, evoke colorful  and exotic artistic visions of the Southwest.

Along with artist, Carol Douglas, we designed a wonderful  "East Goes West" plein air workshop to offer in June '08. The workshop was a great success!

If this is a trip you have been dreaming about, then this is the time in your life to take advantage of the great itinerary planned for 2009. Added to our itinerary, this year is Santa Fe, NM. Get to know the 2nd largest art market in the US.

There is nothing like experiencing the Cobalt Canopy of sky, and the pink high desert colors of the area. It is special and urges artists to break out of their color comfort zone.

Your inner artist  will never forget the time spent on the turquoise trail, the mountains, canyons, huge skys, cascading mountain streams, and  360 degree sunsets. Seeing this land thru the eyes of visiting artist Teresa Vito, will add further insights about color and form to your process. It has the power to transform your work, and perhaps your life.

This land is the inspiration for countless artists visions and works of art. I invite you to give yourself a gift you will never forget.

Yours in Art,

Shelli

Testemonials From 2008
"EAST GOES WEST"

“Taos was the experience of a lifetime for me, a dream come true. The Hotel was, not only comfortable and the food excellent, but it was situated perfectly for all the scenic/subject excursions.”

“An excellent re-grounding for any individual who wants to devote a week strictly to the observance of the beauty of nature. It's not often one can devote oneself 24-7 to the passion of art in the company of likeminded devotees.”

- Rose Ann, Bay Shore, NY

“I had an extraordinary experience as a participant in the Paint Taos Plein Air Workshop with Instructor's Shelli Robiner-Ardizzone and Carol Douglas in 2008. Our group traveled beautiful Taos County west of the Rio Grande and enjoyed the comforts of the historic Sagebrush Inn with it's priceless collection of Southwestern art. We painted at fascinating locations blazed by Georgia O' Keefe and Mable Luhan to name a few. Our workshop instruction fostered a creative and challenging environment, to inspire the creative spirit.  I'd definitely do it again!”

“I look forward to my next trip to Taos, as my last trip is etched with fondness upon my memory.“

- Carol Ann Barrett

“Visiting Taos, NM, for the workshop led by Shelli Roiner-Ardizzone and Carol Douglas was an unforgettable experience for me. I've been painting for more than 10 years but was not much into plain air paintings until I left for the workshop, "East Goes West".  However, I immediately fell in love with it.”

“The painting sites the instructors led us to were gorgeous: Taos Pueblo, Georgia O' Keefe's painting sites and Ghost Ranch etc. They were encouraging to me but did not forget to give me sharp criticism that helped me tremendously to improving my painting skill. All the fellow attendees were so friendly and cooperative. It was one of the most wonderful experiences in my painting life.”

- Okim Kim

“The 2008 trip was very well organized indeed. The different number of sites was most imaginative and inspiring. A great deal of planning was well spent to give the students as much and many places to be inspired in.  The teaching was there when you needed it and was not forced upon you. You got what you needed. The hotel was very charming and in keeping with the local. Good food and a pleasant relaxing atmosphere. I had a very good time and would strongly recommend the whole visit.”

- Michael, NYC

"The painting locations were spectacular, the instructors knowledgeable, generous with their time and extremely encouraging. I'm looking forward to next year's trip."

- Cindy Zaglin

“You both did a really good job picking painting locations, and knowing in advance how we might set up and what we might look for in terms of a painting.  The variety of settings and the shift in content and the challenge of meeting new light and scene was really good and really challenging.  I appreciated the guidance I got from both of you on site, and felt comfortable asking for more or less teaching at any given session.

“Also, you both were extremely well organized in running the whole workshop in terms of having a schedule, the studio space, supplies, plans, copies of directions…etc.  I think you both operated at a high level, especially considering you were not old hands at this.”

‘The gallery tours and the demos by you and by Rich Nichols were all good, and added to the intensity of the painting week.”

“Would I recommend the workshop to someone else? Definitely yes, and pretty much without qualifications. I thought it was all in all very good value for the price.”

“Would I do it again? Definitely yes, but in Taos? Well, it was spectacular and I would love to see it again. Thank you both very much – it was a great time and the effort you made in careful planning and thoughtful teaching was obvious and much appreciated.”

Pallete Knife Painting
"Donna," palette knife painting by Shelli Ardizzone

Paint Like Van Gogh, Almost!
with Shelli Ardizzone

This process is a totally gratifying, a plunge into using a limited triad of color, and the palette knife to deliver and manipulate the paint. The students do a simple sketch of the still life set up, and learn how to mix a grand assortment of colors using the 3 primary cololrs and white. It is a color explosion, and painters of all levels push the envelope in direct color application. This is new and unknown territory for most attendees. Use of the knife, and the directly applied clean colors, seems to inspire inhibition, bipassing the usual adult sensors in the joyful creation of the work.
